New Puppy Owners

Just a brief reminder of some important do’s and don’ts to prevent your pup catching parvovirus.

Don’t let your pup mix with strange dogs that spend time on the streets or dogs that mix with other dogs, until one week after the last vaccination
Do follow the vaccination programme written on your card closely. Remember that your pup is not fully protected until after the last vaccination.
Don’t let your pup walk on the ground that other dogs may have been on until after the last vaccination.i.e. locked up in the back yard is OK. Any other dogs you own are safe with your pup if they are fully vaccinated, healthy and don’t mix with other dogs. Parvovirus can be contracted off the
ground contaminated by other dogs.
Don’t let your pup mix with the neighbour’s pups unless your sure they are healthy, vaccinated and isolated.
Do remember annual vaccinations. Once your pup has had the last vaccination a yearly booster will keep his/her immunity up to safe levels.

The two main reasons for Parvovirus are:
1. Failure to keep up with recommended boosters.
2. Failure to isolate pup from sick or carrier dogs or infected ground
Remember, vaccination cost includes a check up and advice. Boosters are essential to provide complete protection
